We have been very busy lately, with updating our main website at niche gallery, and we now hope to have the new main website with lots of new product and features for you our great customers old and we hope new as well.
It has just taken so much longer than we ever imagined, and it has to be right as well.

Hello all,

it has been some time since I have been able to give our blog my attention, due to the fact that I have been taking a step back from business and looking after my two lovely Grand Kids, both girls have been taking up more of my time as it should be and the shop is in capable hands of there mother who manages the shop.

We had a visit from a special ship yesterday as the Queen Victoria was visiting Edinburgh and as with most of the cruise ships that visit she had to park in the River Forth just off South Queensferry and unload her passengers in boats.

As this one is such a large ship you can imagine the town was pretty busy, so to all the visitors who came into the Niche Gallery a big thank you.

This photo gives some idea of the size of the Queen Victoria on her visit to Edinburgh yesterday, she was on a cruise to celebrate the Cunard Lines 170 th birthday, my thanks to Scott Kemp for the photo's. (I have some more which will be posted as soon as I get them onto the P.C.)

We are lucky as we get around 15 cruise ships per year call in and this number is growing due to the fact that Edinburgh and it’s surrounds are such a wonderful place to visit, the spin off’s from this are obvious and a help to all the small businesses in what is really tough times what with the mess the banks and governments have got us all into at no fault of their own of course.

We have been stocking up with lots of good new quality goods of course and as they go onto our website we shall feature some of them on the blog (time permitting of course)

New Artist!

Happy to say that we are back on the blog again after some what neglecting the written word for a couple of weeks, to tell the truth I have just not managed to find the time, so much to do and as always not enough time to do it all.

So what’s been going on, we have as always been sourcing new goods to present to the customer a fresh new experience every time or almost every time they walk into the shop.

We are also delighted to tell you that we have been picked out to be a preferred supplier of some outstanding artwork, by an artist named Ian Fraser.

Ian used to design for the Walt Disney Corp, and he designed lots of stuff like globes and castles for the Americans. It is a wee bit unfair to say that he is a "New Artist" but artist he is.

His artwork is truly outstanding with an eye for detail and colour and we love it.

So feast your eye’s on two of his original paintings that we have for sale, we feature more of this great work in the shop in South Queensferry. And we will of course show more of the work on the blog in future.

The photographs really don’t do justice to the original painting, they have to be seen to really appreciate the colour and detail.

Hello All,

Very happy to say at last the summer seems to have arrived, but lets not hold our breath too long this is Scotland after all, but the sun is out and may we all enjoy it while, it lasts.

Well we have at last got the new range of fabulous jewellery in from Miss Dee in Sweden, it is a couple of months late in arriving but worth the wait in our opinion.

They have produced a wonderful line in Children’s jewellery as well (The Princess Range).

First Bud's of May

Hello again all,

We are into spring now although it’s hard to believe with the way the weather jumps around from hot to cold right now, but we keep busy and the staff, have been re-arranging the shop just now and paying particular attention to the window displays, after all their hard work the windows now look very good.

It is a very important part of having a retail outlet and surprises me how so few shops spend much time on this aspect of business, it is after all your first part of advertising, and it is hoped that something in the window or the layout catches someone’s eye as they are passing.

We know from experience that this is in fact, true as we have had people passing in vehicles at night and they will pay us a visit next day or when back in the area,

to pursue their initial interest.

Once again we are waiting on some images to let you see the finished results, so as soon as we have them they shall be on the blog, until then you will just have to bear with the written word.

We are also working on a couple of things that are very exciting and will bring an even better shopping experience to our website, so keep looking out for our great news and please be patient as it involves a lot of work but will be worth the wait.

Volcano’s

Hello all,

We have been a bit lazy with the blog the past two weeks, sorry but this has nothing to do with Volcano’s exploding in Iceland and nothing to do with all flights in or out of the U.K. and most of Northern Europe for that matter being cancelled, no none of this just the fact that I took a well earned rest last weekend (up into the Highlands of Scotland, which i will bring you more of next time) and my i.t. Dept then went on Holiday for a week. So we have to hope that the blog and the website will be right up to date by the middle of the week.(are you listening i.t. department)

Speaking of the Volcano that has gone off in Iceland just tends to remind us all that we are pretty much at the mercy of “Mother Nature” when she wants to show us all who is really in charge of this Planet of ours.
As a small note of interest, did you know that Edinburgh (The City) has a real Volcano right in the centre of town called "Arthurs Seat" it has been long dormant and long may this dormant state continue. But there cannot be many Cities in the World that have a Volcano in the centre?

So the blog will be ongoing as always and bringing you all the latest from our shop, where we do have some more stock to be showing, and of course will update you all with images of our great range of Scottish Perfume and soaps as soon as the manufacturers supply us the images.

We are delighted to be able to announce that we are now a preferred supplier for the brand new range of Scottish Perfumes, Soaps and oils that have been around seven years in development.
All made in the Scottish Highlands. So new and fresh we don’t even have it on our website yet! We hope to have all details and images on website very soon.

It has been a busy week at the Niche Gallery, and very pleased to tell you all we have got one of the two great ranges of fashion jewellery onto the website, well done the I.T. dept (it is a large dept of one) but a good job and it is now on show.

The jewellery is from the Creative Dezign group and is a fantastic collection of brass and copper and silver jewellery at affordable prices, just looks great.

The collections from Creative Dezigns are all entirely hand made and contempory in design. Young, old, smart or casual, the versatility of these ranges provide the perfect accessory so go on and have a quick look and be sure to tell us what you think, good or bad we really do welcome your input.

Well it’s Mothers day tomorrow (Sunday) in the U.K.) I know that in other countries they perhaps use other times of the year, but it is tomorrow over here.

So I think we should all take the day off? (That would be a real novelty) but we hope that at least some of the hard working mothers out there will be able to at least take it easy, perhaps even breakfast in bed! Are you listening out there children.

Hello all,

Well with the melting of all the recent snow does this finally mean that we are now approaching the spring, is it too much to hope for as it seems to have been a really long winter here in Scotland.
Mothers Day is fast approaching and it usually means that spring is just round the corner, then of course their is Easter at the end of the month so lots to keep us busy with.
I think I mentioned before that we have been busy working on new stock to show for this spring time and we hope to be able to take supply of the new "Miss Dee Jewellery Range" within a week or so, as soon as we take delivery of it we shall get it loaded onto the website.
Also a whole new range of great sculptures are due to arrive. We will get them onto the blog as soon as I can.
We are also eagerly awaiting a brand new never seen before product that we are really excited about to do with a product sourced and made in Scotland with a world wide appeal, so as soon as we now you will know.

Stripped Icebergs.

Hi all,
As the cold weather seems to be very topical, at least in this country for now, thought i would share these pictures with you all, nothing to do with the shop or website but great pictures all the same, they were sent to me a few months ago.

Icebergs in the Antarctic area sometimes have stripes, formed by
layers of snow that react to different conditions.
Blue stripes are often created when a crevice in the ice sheet
fills up with melt water and freezes so quickly that no bubbles form.
When an iceberg falls into the sea, a layer of salty seawater can
freeze to the underside. If this is rich in algae, it can form a
green stripe.
Brown, black and yellow lines are caused by sediment, picked up
when the ice sheet grinds downhill towards the sea.
These pictures are available because 2008 was the coldest winter.

Hi all,
Is it ever going to stop snowing over here in Scotland, really i do not remember a time when we have had so much of the "white stuff" It has been snowing on and off for a few days now and it means that people find it hard to get around as the powers that be always seem to have an excuse why the roads are not clear even though they must get the same forecast as the rest of us.
In fact pretty sure they get an even more accurate forecast, and still it dont seem to matter they always get "caught out" so we all slide around trying our best to get on with life eh!
Going to try and get more on the blog as soon as time allows, for now will just go with todays rant!

A mixture of Artwork.

Today we will feature a mix of art from various artist’s that we feature for sale at the Niche Gallery; most of it is on the website although some of the art can only be seen at the shop in South Queensferry in Scotland.
So as we continue with the cold weather in Scotland, we have been busy with trade shows and ordering for the spring and further ahead, as we always aim to bring you the customer the best possible range of quality and affordable products from around the world.
Our aim as always is to be as “inclusive” as possible and not “exclusive”

Scottish Artist’s

Hello there,
As we get close to Valentine’s day (seems like it was just xmas) it’s time to feature some of the great artwork we have for sale from Scottish artist’s after all we are based in Scotland (although we ship worldwide) and we have a tremendous selection of some of the better known and some not so well known artists from Scotland.
To many to feature just on a blog and I could not do them all justice, we are also always interested in new artists Local or international, so if you think your art or you know of a budding and talented artist that could do with some much needed exposure to the commercial market then drop us a line, and let us see the work.

The first painting is by an artist called Jim Nicolson, and it is of a scene from the Outer Hebrides (Islands of the West coast of Scotland)

Next we have a painting from Judith Bridgeland called Stormy Seas.
A lot of artwork in Scotland seems to show the Sea, perhaps something to do with the fact that it is such a small country where you can never be more than about 50 miles from the Sea.

Then we move on to a particular favourite of ours Lesley Mclaren, and this one is called Silent Watch.

Julie Ramsey is a pretty well known artist in Scotland and we have sold her paintings and limited edition prints for some time now, she does some very well known scenes of Edinburgh and the surrounds, this one is a limited edition of a scene in Edinburgh’s High Street (Known as the “Royal Mile) and it shows John Knox’s House (built in the 15th century and still there)

Next up is a great picture by Kate Philip called Musical Montage.

Lin Pattullo is another artist that we have featured for a long time and her paintings are just so simple and reflect a real nice feel about them.

So there you have a small selection of some of the great Scottish art we have for sale online and at the shop in South Queensferry in Scotland. I was not going to mention Valentines Day tomorrow but we do also sell fresh flowers and floral displays at the shop (there I have actually mentioned it twice)

Hi there, continuing on the theme of artwork we feature and sell at The Niche Gallery, online and in our shop in Scotland, would like to show some of the work by an artist we have sold for many years now, we have featured his art before but we happen to think that you just never can get tired of looking at and admiring the artwork of Duncan Macgregor.
His scenes involving the sea and boats in particular are very good and we feature a couple of different media here, where there are originals, and limited editions.
There are some on canvas and some done on glass, in a special limited edition that has in fact sold out from the publisher some time ago.

Artist of the Week.

Hello all,
Continuing on the theme of featured artists each week, here is some original art that we think is really stunning in its use of colour and we think it is just uplifting art, so what better reason to feature it at this some what drab time of year for most of us. The artwork is all new pieces from an artist by the name of Ben Payne, the art shown here is all original oils on stretched canvas, we also have some of his limited edition work on canvas although not featured here for now.

Hello All,
Time to feature some of the fantastic and successful artists that Niche Gallery have, we feature some of the leading artists available in the U.K. and even if the work is not in stock we have access to the artists work, and we can also take commissions from any particular artist that is featured.
First artist we shall concentrate on and feature is Henderson Cisz, one of the best in his field of contemporary City scenes, a definite favourite of ours.
We shall feature a different artist and there work each week, so keep a look out to see some real good artwork, and remember “never let a wall go naked”, put a painting on your wall and make it one that you like as you will be looking at it for a long time.

Still Freezing!

Hi All,
As the big freeze continues in Scotland, the first week of the new decade has certainly been a cold one, now we do get some harsh weather here in Scotland but we are not used to the sub zero temperatures lasting for so long, and as you can imagine when the weather stays so cold over a long period of time it does cause problems for everyone, according to the ones who know about these things this has been the harshest winter here for 50 years.
Our great staff, have been instrumental in the shop being open as usual although the advantage of those wishing to shop on the internet means that you don’t need to brave the elements and can shop from the comfort of the home or office and have the goods delivered safely to your door. Of course the internet shop never closes.

So try and keep warm and safe wherever you may be.

Hi All,
Welcome to 2010, and just had to make the first Niche Gallery post of this New Year, to tell you all about a real crazy event that occurs each year on the first of January in South Queensferry. And it is still snowing here in Scotland.

It is the annual “Loony Dook” where a whole load of very brave or some would say mad souls take to the invigorating and some what fresh waters of The River Forth, this is in sub zero temperatures don’t forget and is no doubt just after a long celebration of the New Year. Still the big topic here is the continued snow, which started more than a week ago, and it is still going, not so good for anyone on the move outside but our Husky just loves it.
At a time like this she really does show her background, and makes me realise that the Husky breeds have not been domesticated for all that long.
Animals and nature in harmony while the white stuff after it loses its novelty just becomes “Delayed Rain” to the rest of us humans.

Due to the very heavy snow and Artic weather the shop has had only the local staff working in it, as the weather really has been pretty bad even for Scotland.

Well it’s officially freezing here folks, in some of the heaviest snowfall for years, around 150 cm to 200 cm in places; it was a somewhat difficult drive to work for all today.
Now they (The wise ones) have known that we were in for a cracking winter storm, and to be fair most of the main roads in and around are passable, but do they ever stop to think (The wise ones) that traffic needs to also get from where they start to then get onto the main roads and of course most of the smaller feeder roads are not gritted or half gritted.
The show must go on as they say, so well done to all the staff, for there continued support in these bad weather times.
No pictures today as this is just a quick rant, oh sorry meant to say blog.

While this country is in the grip of a real Artic blast of pretty cold weather, brought to mind some of the great artwork we stock, by a set of twin brothers called Steve & Chris Rock, those two artists actually go up to the Artic Circle and spend there time inside Glaciers and paint what they see inside the Glacier, with all the differing ways that the Sun filters through the ice with some amazing results as you can see from the selection below.

Hello All,
Welcome to any new readers, as we go into the last 6 shopping days to Christmas Day and as ever seems to be the same every year as we leave it all to the last minute and then wonder where all the time has gone.
Winter has finally arrived in Scotland with the first really cold days and snow (it’s just been wet up to now) so it is starting to look a bit like Xmas now.
Something we had a problem with when spending this time of year in hot countries, could just not get used to seeing Santa Clause all dressed up and sweating in the heat.
Although theirs a lot to be said for it being nice and warm on Xmas day.
As you can imagine it is a manic time for shops at Xmas, but of course with the tough economic times we have had in this part of the world for the past 18 months, it has not been as busy as some previous years.

12 Days to Go.

Hi All,
Well only 12 days to go to Christmas Day now, and at this very busy time of the year, finding it almost impossible to find the time to update our blog on a regular basis, but will try our best, so now let me introduce you to a photographer that we are now featuring, his name is Andrew Walker and on his travels around the world he has taken some pretty good pictures.
We have his pictures made into triptyches and on canvas to produce an effect such as seen in the first picture below, nice and bright for a cold winter’s day.

This second one we think looks really good and also features some of our favourite animals, the penguin, they just look so funny when they are out of the water, and this picture of the 4 Little Amigo’s was taken in the Southern Hemisphere.

We have and continue to move stuff around the shop all the time to keep it looking fresh and interesting and the staff have redone one of the windows to feature some more of our Fairy Castles and also to show of some of the new triptych’s.

We also have some more new Pottery in the Shop by Anita Harris, her work is very well know and also collectable, Anita used to design for Poole Pottery and also Moorcroft before starting up on her own with others to keep up the high class of this fine art.

Hi,
When more is less, or is it the other way round, can never work that one out, but Christmas Day is now just around the corner.
Our friendly staff have been working very hard to create a great Xmas atmosphere in the shop, that is kind of difficult to transpose to a blog, so more pictures it will need to be.

Hi,

It’s been a pretty crazy week, and have just returned from a last min trip to Spain, which was really last minute stuff, which at first I was thinking i could do without this trip at my busiest time of the year.
However it needed to be done, after what has probably been the worse year we can remember both on a personal front and a business front.
We went to visit some friends first in a lovely small Spanish town called Mijas up in the hills above Malaga, and it was fantastic, with all the white houses and kept really clean too, so well done to the local Council there, (are you listening Edinburgh Council)
This was of course also a business trip and we think we may have sourced some very good products to feature next year at Niche Gallery.

Some of the village, and have to say it was good to see the sunshine again, the weather was pretty good although as expected a bit cool at night.

Fairy Tales.

Hello all,
At this magical time of year it is we feel appropriate to show you all some of the magical products we stock, including the wonderful range of Fairy castles.
They are all hand made in Ireland and no castle is the same as the next one, more than a wonderful gift and something that could be handed down through the generations, an heirloom if you want.
What little girl (Or not so little) would not wish to have this as a gift, and when you see them light up, then you see the Childs eye’s light up as well.

Primrose Castle.

Primrose Glitter.

The primrose fairy castle is decorated with numerous yellow primroses, ladybirds, mushrooms and butterflies. The positioning of the decoration will vary from castle to castle as no one castle is identical to another. The ladybirds and butterflies are brought to life with metal feelers and are painted black. All castles in this range are colourful and finished with a coat of glitter to add a little bit of magic.

Fairies.

What Thoughtful fairy would not want to live in a Fairy Castle like this one.

Rose Castle

The rose fairy castle is decorated with pearly pink roses, ladybirds and mushrooms. The positioning of the decoration will vary from castle to castle as no one castle is identical to another. The ladybirds are brought to life with metal feelers and are painted gold. Pastel colours run through the pearlescent range, these colours are brought to life with the pearly paint that is added to the mix to give the castle a slight sheen.

This feature light is made up of two parts, a base and the castle itself. The light fitting is secured into the base of the feature light.

The little guy in the family has not been forgotten about either as they now hand make great Forts for the guy’s.
Little Knights Fort.
This is the first design to launch our new boys’ range of feature lights. This castle is a very special princes’ fort. Silver metal flags our affixed to the turret roofs and the castle is painted in silver and blue tones. The castle is decorated with ivy and stone brick features along with slated roofs

Another wonderful Fairy to look at from our collection.

The Fairies are from another supplier and are not hand made but no less appealling than the hand made Castles and look great together.

Hello All,
Well they do say that people in the U.K. are obsessed by the weather, and going by the terrible weather we have had for the last week or so, I can understand the sentiments, also the fact that in many ways the weather really does control a lot of what we do each day, and we think it also has a lot to do with moods as well.
So with this in mind it's a small blog today and thought I would throw in a Limited Edition print we have that show's the Forth Railway Bridge at a better time of the year.

After a very wet last few days, with rains that caused a lot of damage in some parts of the country, and also loss of life it is good to see a little break in the weather for a few hours at least.

The seasons over here seem to be moving as this is the type of weather we would expect in october in the past. So it seams that this year it is taking longer for those that do, to get into the spirit of things, so to try and brighten things up a little lets look at some more product we have stocked up on this year.

Hi There,
At this time of year we feel it is important to remember that Christmas is really all about giving for us hear at Niche Gallery, and last month or so we helped with some fund raising for the local “Ferry Fair” committee, an organisation set up to run the local events in South Queensferry.
We ran an art competition for all the local schools and we framed a collection of the kid’s paintings, showed them in the shop and one of the windows. A silent auction was arranged around the paintings on show.
The staff had a busy time setting every thing up and the window really looked fantastic.

This was the window set up and dressed by the staff, for the silent auction.

We are proud to say that a reasonable amount of cash was raised with all the proceeds going to the “Ferry Fair” committee to go towards all there event organising.
The cheque for the cash has now been handed over to the “Ferry fair” committee.

Thanks to the staff, parents, local schools and of course the children who enterered.

Have to say it is good to welcome some new visitors to the blog thank you for visiting.

Hi All,
Well we can no longer ignore tha fact that Christmas is fast approaching and ready or not it will arrive before we know it: (As it seems to do every year) we are still unloading the boxes of Christmas goodies just arrived from Germany.
Dont know how many of you have ever been to Germany at this time of the year but it is a magical place with all the christmas festivals selling very good quality gifts.

Just doing some work on our website, experimenting with showing products in a video format, starting with our great watch range, and just thinking that this could also be put onto our blog here so watch out and we may just be able to get a couple of video's on the blog to better represent our product range.
Learning new things all the time, as it should be as really the day you stop learning or challenging yourself then in my humble opinion that would be a very poor day indeed.

As we now get into the busy period in the run up to xmas, finding time is now at a premium and having to cope with staff casualties of the dreaded viruses that seem to be endemic just now, was actually thinking about putting one of those countdown clocks onto the blog to show everyone how long it is till xmas day, but I happen to think that we are all pretty much aware of what day it is and how near Christmas is, so we shall go against the herd and refrain from putting a countdown clock on the blog, so if you find that you are running out of time to get the presents in for Christmas don’t blame us please:)
We have just taken delivery of another lot of our great range of outside - in clocks as they are called, and they are looking good in the gallery.

Also very pleased to announce that we now supply Fresh Cut Flowers prepared by our resident professional florist, who also supplies us with all kinds of bouquets of flowers for every occasion, up to now this service is only available at the shop in Scotland but we may bring it onto the website in future as well.

The new range of Miss Dee fashion jewellery has now arrived in the shop in South Queensferry, fresh from Sweden and looking great.

We have been busy setting the range out in the shop, and it is looking good.

No sooner had the staff started to lay the pieces out and put them in the cabinets and the window, when we had happy customers purchasing some of this fantastic jewellery.

Car Couture Classics

Hello All,
We love this collection and like everything else in the Gallery we sell it with enthusiasm but we all have our own favourites, this being one of mine. Nostalgia, it takes me back to the days when my concerns were what I am going to wear today and what pub we were to meet in after work. It was important to remember because back in the dark ages we had to arrange our social lives without mobile phones, forgetting the meeting place might have taken you on a pub-crawl trying to find your friends and that was a real hardship! I made a lot of new friends, looking for my old friends.

I Remember fondly a time before congestion charges and speed cameras, when a sleeping policeman meant a dozing bobby and you could still fill up for less than a couple of quid (U.K. pound sterling), Car Couture relives those glorious carefree days of open top motoring. Beautifully sculpted classic marques and characters of the era vividly recapture all the thrilling fun of wind in your hair.

Street Machines.

Then we move on to today and of course we would not forget the Petrol Heads amongst us, so we have a great collection of Street Machines. They look good at home or on an office desk.

WET, WET, WET

Rain all day today and I cannot feel the “Love is all around us” and struggle to smile, until my Granddaughter starts to talk about Halloween this Saturday, she is very excited about her parties and going tricking and treating in the dark with her baby sister both in full scary costume, (with Mum and Dad of course). I am armed with my pumpkin lantern and bowl, which will be over flowing with delicious sweets with an alternative of Apples, raisins and nuts if required.

Talking of Halloween we are about to launch a favourite of our customers in our Gallery for many a year onto our website. Just a quick reminder that British Summer Time ended during the night, i say what summer? and why do they keep messing with the clock's, the only clock i have correct this morning is the one on my laptop, so i now have to go round and change every thing that worked on a clock system.

So for the U.K. readers, the clocks went back one hour. For some that will mean an extra hour in bed, but just remember this when you wake up an hour early tomorrow morning and you can't get back to sleep.

Stocktaking.

Hi all,
Yes it is that time again when a small business like ours needs to do the stock taking, its only then, that you tend to realise just how many product lines you actually carry, and we do have a lot for a small retail outlet, the up side of this of course is that it gives you our valued customer much more choice of good quality products.
It also allows us the chance to evaluate which stock to continue with and which stock we shall discontinue.
And it allows room for more great products, and the order for Miss Dee Jewellery has now been done and we shall let you know as soon as it comes in to the shop and when it is online. We think it has been worth the wait.

Speaking of stock taking and waiting, brings me to a great scene of the squirrels doing there stock take and gathering up all the cones and nuts they can find for the winter fast approaching, looks like our Husky was thinking the same in this recent photo as she was waiting (in vain) at the bottom of the tree for hours hoping that this particular squirrel was going to drop some of his hard earned gains or even if he was going to drop out of the tree. “It’s a wonderful world” we just need to take the time to notice.
Just a quick note on the Post strike going on in the U.K. just now, this should have no effect on us with regard to any one ordering from our internet site as we have put alternative carriers in place, so that any disruption to customers would be negligible.

Visit of Queen Mary II to South Queensferry

Hello All,
Well on the drive to the shop yesterday morning just as we got over the brow of the last hill on the way to South Queensferry, there was the sight we had waited to see (along with hundreds of others) The Forth Road bridge in the foreground with the mighty shape of the Railway Bridge behind and anchored just of the bridges was the magnificent cruise liner Queen Mary II (Q.M.II) as it is more commonly called.
(Seems to be abbreviations for everything nowadays, we will soon have an abbreviation language as well) A beautiful crisp autumn morning and she was glinting in the sunshine.

The tide was beginning to turn for what was one of the highest tides of the year, and the Sea was as flat as a pancake as all the liners small Tenders started to bring there passengers ashore, I am thinking that they have not had such a calm ride in a small boat, as it was almost eerie just how still the sea was, and looking at the mighty Forth Rail bridge this was no “Bridge over troubled water” today, the end of the Indian summer I reckon.
The small town started to fill up pretty quickly with visitors to see the ship, and passengers alike.

By mid afternoon it had become very busy and there was also a wedding going on in the hotel just 50 paces away from us, as the traffic built up (See Picture) for once the traffic cop’s were out and as a huge stretched limo came down the hill to turn into the High street for the happy couple, the traffic cop on the bike had a word with the driver of the limo and there was, no chance he was going along the High Street, so someone got upset for a bit I suppose but they got there wedding photos with glorious sunshine and the Bridge with the Queen Mary II alongside not many places in the world with such a backdrop for such a photograph eh!

As it came time to close the shop for the day, most of the passengers were making there way back to the ship, and the sun was beginning to drop in the sky.

The Queen Mary II was making her second visit to Edinburgh and surrounds as she was celebrating a Fifth birthday since being launched some of the passengers were telling us, although a real sight to see, in our humble opinion she still has some way to go to reach the same legendary status as her predecessor the ultimate fine looking and graceful Cunard Liner, Queen Elizabeth II (QE2).

Just a quick update to tell you all that the magnificent liner that is the Queen Mary II is now parked just before the Forth Rail Bridge, opposite South Queensferry and the Niche Gallery (We can see her from our side window) what a sight she is, the weather is fine and sunny a little bit cold to start with but a "Perfect Day"and we have managed to get some photographs of her and as soon as I get time I will have then on the blog by tomorrow.

Hi Again,
Keeping our fingers crossed, for good weather this Saturday, as we have the last of the Cruise Liners visiting us.
They have saved the best for last this year with the visit of the Queen Mary II,
(QM, II) as they call her. She is paying a visit to Edinburgh on her travels and the only place they can berth her is opposite South Queensferry, where the passengers use the Ships boats to transfer to land at South Queensferry. A lot of visitors are then bussed, directly into Edinburgh courtesy of, the good people of Edinburgh City Council, for the visitors that perhaps have been there and done it before, there is the historical old town of South Queensferry to browse around, and we look forward to welcoming them all.
Weather depending (as always in Scotland) we hope to get some photo’s of her visit on Saturday, and show then on the Blog.

Until then we will go with a picture of one of our yacht models.
This model in itself is pretty interesting (A limited Edition of 250) as the base of this model is made from mahogany taken from the original keel, timber from the original Gipsy Moth IV that sailed around the world. Part of any sale goes towards the Gipsy Moth IV trust to help in the maintaining of the rebuilt famous yacht.

The Queen Mary II visited last year for the first time, and the good people at the council, sort of underestimated the demand for the amount of interest the visit would generate (Surprise, surprise that! for a nation that is surrounded by water, and used to build all the world’s great ships) so it was gridlock in South Queensferry, for the day. You will see that we are so much more than a gallery, although artwork is important part of what we offer, it is by no means all.

Hello All,

Short blog today as I have had to spend most of the morning waiting on the banks to open, only wish sometimes I had there, working week.

Good news is that we now have the new Miss Dee catalogue and will be ordering the new jewellery soon, and then we need to get it on to my website, are you listening I.T. guys? Along with the details of the bangle watches I gave yesterday, we will get there it all just takes time and I don’t have a team of people working with me.

Going through some recent photograph’s as well and thought I would share this one with you, it is of our dog a Siberian Husky who just has a great time playing on the kids trampoline, this picture makes it look like she has had a “hard days night” she is a lot of fun, very protective and does as she is told most of the time, a bit like some husbands? Oh I will get into trouble now!

Hello Everyone,
Well don’t know about you all, but I like things that have a use apart from looking good, and in trying to come up with something to blog about today, finding it so much more difficult than I ever imagined but also fun at times, some days it just seems like I am becoming “comfortably numb” or should that be uncomfortably numb when my mind just goes blank and you end up staring at the screen.
To get back to the subject of my blog today, going to show you a range of great fashion watches that we have, they are just the thing when you need that special accessory, and can’t think of what to put on.
They come in a load of different colours all with a different stone setting, and look great on your wrist, then you just pull back and wow, there you are you have a neat little watch.

Hello All,
Along with the changing time of the year and the leaves now starting to change colour before mother nature roars in to strip some of them bare for the winter, brings me to the theme again of a changing world (not for me to decide for better or worse)
This week I want to introduce you to a painter whose work we have in the gallery.
His name is Peter Knox and he paints scenes from a time when the North East of England was a real industrial powerhouse (Like many, more parts of the U.K.) his paintings I have to admit, the more I look at them invoke a real sense of a time gone by, with this first one being called All together boys. This is a painting that anyone with a connection to the sea will be able to relate, as the men come out of the shipyard after a tough days work.

Speaking of tough jobs, just heard on the local news that yet another mine has been found in the River Forth, now the people who have to deal with those things that is a tough job, I don’t know much about them, but these terrible weapons must be even more dangerous after being in the sea for over 60 years, to then just be caught up in a fishing boats net, or washed up on the shore like “pebbles on the beach” (although you would not want to kick them) makes you wonder about how many more of these things are laying around the bottom of our oceans, and just how responsible were the people, who were charged with disposing of them at the time!

So hats off to the disposal guys who now have to deal with them.

South Queensferry 002

It would be remiss of me when speaking of South Queensferry, not to mention the leviathan that stands over the town in the shape of the Forth Railway Bridge, now I am pretty sure that many words have been written about this great feat of Victorian engineering that still stands as a testament to the brave men who built and worked on the bridge over one hundred years ago.
I look up at the bridge and every time I admire the feat, and wonder if there will be much of what passes for building nowadays still around in one hundred years time, not many I guess.
I often wonder about the design of the bridge, and think that perhaps they based there design on the loch Ness Monster as it also reminds me of Nessie, or was it the case that Nessie was based on the design of the bridge (leave you to decide that one)

Or perhaps it’s just me that can see any resemblance!

Before the mighty road bridge was built around 40 years ago, the only way to get motor transport over the river was by ferry, (unless you went round the long way by road)

Now I don’t say that I remember the ferries crossing the wide stretch of water but it gets me to thinking that they were probably a great way to cross, and it seems that here in Scotland where the sea is never far away we just don’t make the use of what’s on our doorstep, when I think of other great stretches of water around the world they all use ferries and small boats to transport people and goods around.

When I think of the Sydney (Australia) ferries and the ferries in Seattle (U.S.A.), they work very well and also provide something to the cities they are based in.
A great way to travel, perhaps one day the ones who purport to know better will see the advantages of this form of getting around.

Wonder if the guy at the pier had just missed the boat!

I did say in my first post that this would be a weekly instalment, now that was being a bit ambitious as due to time constraints I will in fact do an instalment on South Queensferry once per month.

Living Glaze.

Miss Dee and the Washing Machine.

Last night was very much a case of man v’s machine, the washing machine has been making funny noises for a little while now, and we usually just turn up the volume on the radio when this happened!!!!!
Now the problems were getting unavoidable as not only was it making strange noises it just was not working as well as it did.
So it now needed to be looked at, and after a lot of huffing, puffing, mopping and swearing, around 2 hours later the problem was found (Well done Chris)
It was a Miss Dee Necklace that had mysteriously got into the washing machine the chain was fine although the heart dangle had disappeared and was now probably amusing some fishes. After cleaning and further examination the chain along, with the smaller dangles on it are all in perfect condition.

The washing machine was then put back together and switched on and hey presto it now works perfectly once again (Well done Chris again)

We shall now see if we can get another spare heart to go on the chain and it will be as good as new again, shining and sparkling as it should. Our Grand Daughter can wear her necklace again, and stop singing “Don’t go breaking my heart”

So we now know that apart from looking great as a fashion accessory they are very hard wearing (if looked after of course) and we would not recommend washing your jewellery in the washing machine, as the jewellery may well be fine but the machine will certainly not be.

Just who is making all the money from these times that you are forced to hold the line?
Then you have to listen to some Fairy tale of why you should not be unsatisfied with there companies service or whatever!

A Warm welcome to all, and a special mention to our new readers, it’s wonderful to see so many different visitor’s get there countries flag up on our flag counter.
Sun is out today and clear sky’s so looks like we may have a couple of nice days ahead, as the say Autumnal weather ahead. Don’t you just love that word (Autumnal) had never really heard it used until the weather reporters started using it on the television.

A great time of the year to brighten up the home with some candles, and we have a great new range of them just in.

In this post, I am looking at creating a little bit of a story about the town where our business is situated, we want to feature some of the history, some of the people, some of the area.

Trying to make it as we see it, so it will not be some dry history story, but a look at the place through our eyes.

To start with we shall tell you a little bit about the fact's etc. Hoping to build it so that the story will run in weekly post's and they will be numberd starting from 001, so that anyone that finds it interesting will be able to do a search on the blog and find what they are looking for, that's the plan at least.

So starting from here,

South Queensferry is a town on the coast and approx 7 miles N.W. from Edinburgh. A short 10 min drive from Edinburgh Airport.

Located in between the 2 great bridges that cross the river Forth, one is the old engineering wonder called the Forth Rail Bridge, (don’t ask what happened to the other 3?)
The other is the road bridge that was constructed around 40 years ago, and is now under pressure from the amount of traffic that crosses this main south to north link over the river.

The town at the other side is called (Wait for it) North Queensferry.

Before the bridges were in place the only way of crossing was by Ferry, or a long round about journey into the centre of Scotland to cross near the town of Stirling.

The Queens part of the name comes from another story which we shall go into later.
The population is only around 10,000 so not a big place by any stretch of the imagination, it still retains the feel of a village by the sea with a lot of old interesting buildings along the High Street and scattered around the local area.

The High Street has a few great restaurants and it really is becoming a destination thanks to a lot of hard work by some of the business owners.

As we continue our story about South Queensferry we hope to introduce lots of photographs old and new.

Aside from the small harbour at the back of our shop, there is a large Marina where you can also learn to sail (RYA) affiliated, and most days sailing craft of all kinds can be seen on the water. Along with a pretty active association that deals with festivals and such for the local community, it’s a busy little town, with all the problems that small old towns have in dealing with the volume of traffic that is generated nowadays.

Parking is available although there is a need for more, not sure if there is the political will to provide this in my opinion.
There are a varied amount of other businesses located along the High Street, so everything that you would need is pretty much there.

In this old photogragh (undated) looking up the High street from the East, the Niche Gallery is located on the opposite side of the old clock tower (still there) as is the raised part of the High Street. If you were to cross the road from the clock tower and walk 50 paces , you would arrive at the Niche Gallery.

The world as we know it seems to be constantly changing, full of new challenges and “changes”.

Not dramatic changes just a refresh, although if you are an artist or photographer then perhaps you may want to get in touch with us, as we do have an exciting project that will be going onto the website soon.

Changes to the site are a big job and do take time so please be patient with us, the site will continue as normal so you can still purchase and choose from our ever growing product list (did you know that we stock over 150 different lines of product) from artwork to small crystal’s.

New changes to the website and keeping up with the blog, present new challenges for sure, and the internet presents its own challenges! But you can buy with confidence from us with secure payment facilities on our website; we try and dispatch orders within 24 hrs.

As the days get shorter, at least here in Scotland, the surroundings slowly start to change as Mother Nature carries on her journey and the colours around us also start to change, there is a definite chill in the air in the mornings now, which our dog, a Husky just loves, as she gets ready for her favourite time of the year.

As long as it stays bright and cool you will not hear us say -”Oh how I wish that it would rain” but lets not forget that there are places in the world where they would be saying this and other places that wished it did not rain quite so much, such as the terrible situation that seems to hit the Pacific Region just now.

One of my favourite views on paintings right now are the superb collection of Duncan Macgregor’s art work that we have, in fact we were lucky enough to get the last 3 in the set from the publisher, we think his work is pretty special but please allow the pictures below to speak about his fine take on what would be a great view at any time of the year.

If you look close you may be able to make out the fact that these Paintings are done on Glass to produce a fantastic effect, as we try and say "Unique".

We also have a fine collection of local and well know Scottish Artists, which we will be showcasing as time goes on.

Will also be having a monthly look at the historical old town where we are located, a place like any other, I guess full of rich history, and “never ending stories” but that’s for later.

Just a quick note that we seem to have some others trying to publish a blog on top of or running along beside this official blog, untill we get the situation sorted out, we shall be still be publishing but we shall make mention of it every time, the people doing this are from some college in Canada, (We know who you are)

or do we have to put it in Japanese for them to understand as that can be done as well,and we have notified the appropriate athorities who are now dealing with this, just one of the petty things that occur nowadays with some people who dont have an original idea in the heads.

Can we just let them know that its all been done before.

I think we have been very good with restraining quotes on this blog up to now.

Anyone have the “Time”

The most precious commodity there is and no one can purchase or sell it.

Far to detailed a subject to get into on this blog for now but a fascinating subject all the same when you really think of it, each persons perception of time is slightly different but the one thing that stays constant is the second hand in the clock (unless the batteries run down of course) which brings me to the “jist” of today’s blog, as we have just taken delivery of some unusual clocks that can be used inside or outside.

Fortunately they are all pretty much silent but look very good in the gallery beside some of the wonderful paintings.

There is even one that is “Radio Controlled” , amazing what technology means nowadays, this clock really is great, you just put the batteries in it and watch the minute and second hand race around until they lock onto the correct time, so no more asking what the correct time is. Most of them run on “AA” batteries.

These clocks are designed to be used outside or inside and would be ideal in a conservatory or even if you have a glass house for growing your tomatoes and other fruits and vet, so no more excuses for not coming in and saying you lost all track of time.

Even as I write this “Time keeps on slipping, slipping into the future”

Nice to see some of the comments that the blog is attracting, and also to see the varied countries where people are visiting from, thank you to you all we appreciate your interest, as time is different in each country its amazing that it was all standardised to Greenwich Mean Time, from the Greenwich Laboratory in London, what did people do before this “GMT” was set up.

I guess they did not work to time as we know it, there lives were then more determined by there surroundings or where they were in the world, so the herdsman’s day would be run by the needs of there animals and so on, fascinating subject that I just don’t have the time to delve into right now, as these clocks keep telling me.

More than just a Blog!

Hi There,

Welcome back and a very big thank you and warm welcome to all the followers, we really do appreciate you all helping to make this blog a success.

Our aim as I have said before is to present an informative and useful blog and not just a dry product only read.

So we are going to introduced a few tangents here.

As something of a slight life change in our family we just all got so fed up with eating plastic super market packaged food, so we have now started to go back to the days of cooking meals from scratch and have to say we cheated a little bit and went out and purchased a couple of non expensive cook books. It really has been some thing of a pleasant surprise and as we all lead such busy lives we needed stuff that could be thrown together quickly, just meant that some preparation needed to be done the night before, but when every one, mucks in, it is not difficult and every meal we have had has been pretty good.

We have still had some take away meals but all in all it’s been great and the food tastes so much better. So before I “ramble on” too much (good song there)

This got us thinking that we would also like to share this with you, and why, with all your help of course don’t we run a “Recipe of the Month” thing, just simple easy to make meals, we are not looking for fancy time consuming cooking, and what we can do is publish the recipe each month.

Your recipe can be emailed to sales@nichegallery.co.uk or just put them into the comment page and we will look at them and your recipe will be on the Niche Gallery Blog. At the end of the month we shall publish your recipe in the main blog.

For a bit of “fun” we are also going to try and slip into the post the title of a song or a well known line from a song and you need to guess who the singer was, and we will also see how this goes, could be a bit of “fun”

We are always looking for comments and or suggestions so please send them in, and tell all your friends about us.

In time we will have the best ways for everyone to interact with this but it is early days doing this blog so stick with us and laugh at the mistakes, tell us and we will correct them, and if you happen to see a quality product that you think we would be interested in having in the shop or online then please tell us about it.

Hi again,

The title says it all about us we think as we stock so many unique and some not so unique products, just to give a little taster of some of the new stock we have soursed for the gallery, i am enclosing a couple of pic's to show fantastic childrens shoes/boots that we have just got in from the makers of the famous "Robeez" shoes, you know the ones that all the star's kids are wearing just now, they are very good we have to admit and we have one of our Grand Kid's fitted out in a pair, they are just so neat and look as good as we think they must feel.

Hi There,

Thought we would give you a bit more info about our Physical .
"Real" shop at 6-7 High Street, South Queensferry, just a few miles outside of Edinburgh, right on the seaside.
You will see from the attached pic that we are open Monday to Saturday and also on Sunday afternoon.
Just between the two buildings in the photo is the little Harbour.
There was a cruise ship arrived into the forth yesterday and they berth just off to the east of the Forth Rail Bridge and they are shipped to shore on small boats, and while most of the visitors are wisked off to Edinburgh in buses we do get a lot of interested visitors from the cruise ships and we are also looking forward to next month when the majestic "Queen Mary" will be paying another visit to the Forth.
South Queensferry being a small historical town right on the water and our own love of the sea, means that we do stock a few Nautical style Paintings and Gifts, amongst all our other "Goodies".

Artwork we stock and Like (of course)

Hi,
We are going to update the blog with a few of our most loved artworks first of all to give our friends a better idea of the type of artist's work we stock, and of course we can arrange for commissions to be done if required, just contact us for details, we will build up an album of great (in our opinion) artwork on the blog.
Without boring everyone to much we do have access to over 100 of the best known commercial artist's around, and rather than start to list them better if we let you see an example of there work, and we could even run a little competition if we have enough interest, lets say we count up the votes for each artist each month and we shall publish a little display of there work.
Let me work on this a bit more as we could always offer a small price (say discount off a purchase) or such.
So i better load a couple of pictures to let you see eh!

Hi there,

Adding a new artist to this blog, to let you see some of his artwork, you may or not have heard of Fabian Perez but we at http://www.nichegallery.co.uk/ love his work, being very atmospheric and not in the least pretentious, in our opinion just good art. Not about to write too much about it as we would not consider ourself's as art critics we just like what we like and we always just say if you like it and you want it, and of course it is not going to mean you go without for a week then why not buy it.
Remember No Wall Should Remain Naked for to long.
Still needing to work on getting our blog onto our website as well and will be speaking to our website guy tomorrow and with anyluck you will be able to see our blog direct from the website.
Niche Gallery does not just have great artwork, and in due course we will feature some of our great other products, hey we have even just got in today "A spider catcher" which is amazing really as it allows those that are not to keen on our little eight legged friends to catch them at arms lentgh and it (this is the really cool bit) also keeps them unharmed so you can put them back outside and they can carry on with there amazing lives, great eh!
